Chalk markers and liquid chalk markers are both pens that contain ink, but the main difference between the two is the type of ink they contain. Chalk markers use water-based pigment ink that is opaque, water-resistant, and reactivated with a damp cloth. Liquid chalk markers use a special kind of liquid ink that is specially formulated for use on surfaces such as slate, chalkboard, glass, and plastic. The liquid ink acts more like a liquid paint when used, but is less smudge resistant than the pigment ink of a chalk marker.
